Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Barriers to Effective Communication II01:21

Barriers to Effective Communication II

The barriers to effective communication also include cultural barriers, semantic barriers, gender barriers, and time constraints.
Cultural barriers:
Differences in values, beliefs, religion, knowledge, and tradition can significantly impact communication. Awareness of nonverbal cues is critical, especially when conversing with a patient from a different culture. What appears appropriate in one culture may be inappropriate in another.
Semantic barriers:
As a result of their tendency to use...
Nursing Implementation01:15

Nursing Implementation

Implementation is the execution of the nursing care plan developed during the planning phase.
The five steps to implementing effective nursing care include reassessing the patient, reviewing and revising the existing nursing care plan, organizing the resources and care delivery, anticipating and preventing complications, and implementing nursing interventions.

Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System

The issues and trends in healthcare delivery are constantly changing. The COVID-19 pandemic is one recent issue that wreaked havoc on healthcare systems, causing a shortage of healthcare workers, high demand for medicines and supplies, and increased medical expenditure due to a lack of insurance. Other issues include rising healthcare costs and care fragmentation.
Cost Containment
Payment for healthcare services has historically promoted adoption of costly and often unnecessary or inefficient...
Current Trends in Nursing II01:30

Current Trends in Nursing II

Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

SBAR II: Application of SBAR

SBAR is an effective communication tool used by healthcare professionals to communicate patient information accurately. SBAR stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation. For a better understanding, an example is given below.
SBAR Report from a Nurse to a Health Care Provider
S: "Hello, Dr. Smith. This is Jane, RN, from the Med Surg unit. I am calling to tell you about Ms. White in Room 210, who is experiencing increased pain and redness at her incision site. Her recent...

Summary

A 9-month evidence-based practice (EBP) fellowship improved nurses' practice and knowledge. While attitudes remained unchanged, perceived barriers to EBP implementation significantly decreased, highlighting their impact on practice.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Evidence-Based Practice Implementation
  • Healthcare Quality Improvement

Background:

  • Nurses require specialized training to effectively implement evidence-based practice (EBP).
  • Understanding factors influencing EBP adoption, such as perceived barriers, is crucial for program development.
  • Previous interventions have shown mixed results in improving EBP across nursing practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a 9-month collaborative regional evidence-based practice (EBP) fellowship program.
  • To assess changes in nurses' practice, attitude, knowledge, and perceived barriers related to EBP implementation.
  • To determine the predictive role of barriers in EBP implementation among fellowship participants.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental, pre- and posttest design was employed.
  • Three annual cohorts (N=142) of nurses participated from 2008 to 2010.
  • Paired t tests and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to analyze data.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant increases were observed in EBP practice (+.82; p<.001) and knowledge/skills (+.78; p<.001).
  • No significant change was found in nurses' attitudes towards EBP (+.16; p=.198).
  • All four subscales of perceived barriers showed significant decreases (p=.036 to <.001), with barriers explaining 6.8%–13.9% of variances in practice, attitude, and knowledge.

Conclusions:

  • The collaborative regional fellowship program effectively enhanced nurses' EBP practice and knowledge/skills.
  • Perceived barriers remain significant predictors of EBP implementation, even after fellowship participation.
  • Future EBP initiatives should address identified barriers to optimize implementation among nurses.
