Group C streptococci are increasingly causing infections. In children, group C streptococcal sinusitis can lead to severe complications, including death, highlighting the need for prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Group C streptococci are recognized as significant human pathogens.
  • Sinusitis can be a serious infection, particularly in pediatric patients.

Observation:

  • A case of group C streptococcal sinusitis in a 6-year-old girl is presented.
  • Four additional cases of group C streptococcal sinusitis in patients under 18 years old were reviewed.
  • Common features included young age, central nervous system complications, and delayed treatment.

Findings:

  • Three of the five pediatric patients had bacteremia (bacteria in the bloodstream) due to group C streptococci.
  • Two patients with group C streptococcal sinusitis and bacteremia unfortunately died.
  • The study underscores the potential severity of group C streptococcal infections.

Implications:

  • Serogrouping is crucial when beta-hemolytic streptococci are isolated from sinus cultures.
  • Prompt initiation of appropriate antimicrobial therapy is essential upon identifying group C streptococci.
  • Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for suppurative intracranial complications in these cases.
