Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential differences in endothelial function between Caucasian and Korean ethnic groups.
  • To compare vascular responses to specific physiological stimuli in these populations.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed endothelial function using two key measures: response to local heat and response to vascular occlusion.
  • Recruited 10 Caucasian and 10 Korean participants (under 35 years old).
  • Measured skin blood flow changes under controlled heat application (38°C, 40°C, 42°C) and following vascular occlusion (4-minute occlusion, 2-minute reperfusion).

Main Results:

  • Caucasians demonstrated significantly higher skin blood flow responses to local heat across all tested temperatures compared to Koreans (p=0.001).
  • Peak blood flow in Caucasians reached 517.4±135.8 flux at 42°C, versus 398±97.2 flux in Koreans.
  • The skin blood flow response to vascular occlusion was also significantly greater in Caucasians (peak 411.9±88.9 flux) than in Koreans (peak 332.4±75.8 flux) (p=0.016).

Conclusions:

  • Findings suggest that Koreans may exhibit lower endothelial function compared to Caucasians.
  • Genetic variations between these ethnic groups are proposed as a potential contributing factor to the observed differences in endothelial function.
