Anatomical Terminology01:20

Anatomical Terminology

Knowledge of anatomy is essential to understand human biology and medicine. Anatomists and health care professionals use standard terminology to describe the human body with more precision and no ambiguity. Anatomical terms have mostly Greek and Latin-derived roots. Because these languages are rarely used in conversation, the meaning of words remains the same. Each term is made up of a root in between the prefixes and suffixes. The root of a term often refers to an organ, tissue, or condition,...

GTPases and their Regulation02:14

GTPases and their Regulation

Guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G-proteins), also known as GTPases, are a superfamily of proteins that regulate many cellular processes, such as cell signaling, vesicular transport, and the regulation of cell shape and motility. Mutation or dysfunction of these proteins can lead to disease. There are around 40,000 known G-proteins that can broadly be classified into two groups ‒  small G-proteins consisting of a single domain and large multi-domain G-proteins.
Large G-proteins, also known...

Positron Emission Tomography01:29

Positron Emission Tomography

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique involving radiopharmaceuticals — substances that emit short-lived radiation. Although the first PET scanner was introduced in 1961, it took 15 more years before radiopharmaceuticals were combined with the technique and revolutionized its potential.
One of the main requirements of a PET scan is a positron-emitting radioisotope, which is produced in a cyclotron and then attached to a substance used by the part of the body being...

Area of Science:

  • Immunogenetics and immunoinformatics, focusing on the genetics of immune responses.

Background:

  • The complexity and diversity of the immune repertoire pose significant challenges for data interpretation in immunogenetics.
  • A need for biological expertise, standardization, and efficient knowledge management systems is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce IMGT-ONTOLOGY, the first ontology for formal knowledge representation in immunogenetics and immunoinformatics.
  • To establish standardized methods for managing immunogenetic knowledge.

Main Methods:

  • Development of IMGT-ONTOLOGY based on seven axioms: IDENTIFICATION, DESCRIPTION, CLASSIFICATION, NUMEROTATION, LOCALIZATION, ORIENTATION, and OBTENTION.
  • Elaboration of IMGT standards including keywords, labels, gene/allele nomenclature, unique numbering, and Collier de Perles.

Main Results:

  • IMGT-ONTOLOGY successfully manages immunogenetic knowledge through diverse facets derived from the axioms.
  • IMGT standards provide a scientific chart for identification, description, classification, and numerotation.

Conclusions:

  • IMGT-ONTOLOGY has become the global reference for knowledge representation in immunogenetics and immunoinformatics.
  • It covers immunoglobulins, T cell receptors, major histocompatibility proteins, and related immune system proteins across species.
