Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumor (PHAT) is a rare soft tissue neoplasm with low malignant potential.
  • PHAT most commonly occurs in the lower extremities.

Observation:

  • This case series reports the imaging findings of three patients with PHAT.
  • Two patients presented with subcutaneous tumors in the lower extremities.
  • One patient had an intramuscular tumor in the upper extremity.

Findings:

  • Imaging features of PHAT are variable.
  • Enhancing subcutaneous tumors with ill-defined margins are characteristic.
  • Diagnosis should be considered in extremity soft tissue tumors.

Implications:

  • This study provides the first description of PHAT imaging features.
  • Radiologists can use these findings to aid in diagnosing PHAT.
  • Early diagnosis can lead to timely and appropriate management.
