Schneider's (1958) construct of depressive personality requires evaluation.
Understanding personality traits is crucial for accurate mental health diagnoses.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the reliability and validity of the depressive personality construct.
To determine if depressive personality is distinct from existing mood disorders.

Main Methods:

177 outpatients were assessed using structured interviews and inventories.
A 6-month follow-up assessment was conducted.
Interrater reliability, internal consistency, and test-retest stability were analyzed.

Main Results:

Depressive personality criteria demonstrated moderate to good reliability and stability.
Assessment of depressive personality traits was not affected by clinical state.
Preliminary evidence supported the convergent and discriminant validity of depressive personality.

Conclusions:

The depressive personality construct is reliable and valid.
Depressive personality is related to, but not fully encompassed by, dysthymia.
This construct offers a distinct perspective beyond current mood disorder classifications.
