Skin prick testing (SPT) is more sensitive than immunofluorescence method (IFM) for detecting atopy to Dermatophagoides mites. SPT can often replace IFM for allergy testing in patients with mite allergies.

Main Results:

  • SPT demonstrated higher sensitivity than IFM in detecting atopy to Dp and Df (P < 0.05).
  • With IFM as the gold standard, SPT sensitivity exceeded 95%, with specificity just under 80%.
  • Both methods showed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.779, 0.776; P < 0.01) in detecting mite atopy, and IgE concentrations/SPT results for Dp and Df were highly correlated.

Conclusions:

  • SPT is a more sensitive method than IFM for diagnosing atopy to Dp and Df.
  • SPT can frequently substitute for IFM in clinical practice for evaluating mite allergies.
  • Assessing specific IgE for either Dp or Df is sufficient for diagnostic purposes.
