Evaluation of KIR genes in recurrent miscarriage

Recurrent miscarriage may be linked to an imbalance in killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) favoring activation. Women with recurrent miscarriage showed higher rates of activating KIR gene genotypes (Bx) and lower rates of inhibitory KIR gene genotypes (AA).

- Sequence-specific oligonucleotide probes analysis was used to examine 16 KIR genes.

- Bx genotypes, characterized by an increased number of activating KIR genes, were significantly more frequent in women with recurrent miscarriage (p=0.014).
- AA genotype (AA1), associated with inhibitory KIR genes, was significantly less frequent in the recurrent miscarriage group (p=0.014).
- No significant differences were observed in the frequencies of individual KIR genes between the groups.
Conclusions:
- An elevated proportion of activating KIRs on NK cells may contribute to the development of recurrent miscarriage.
- The balance of KIR gene genotypes, rather than individual genes, appears relevant to recurrent miscarriage risk.
