Summary

Depression may be more common in individuals with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis, even with normal thyroid function. This study found higher depression scores in patients with this condition compared to healthy individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of depression in patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis and normal thyroid function.
  • To determine if depression is elevated in individuals with euthyroid chronic autoimmune thyroiditis.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 201 subjects, including 94 with euthyroid chronic autoimmune thyroiditis and 107 healthy controls, was studied.
  • Serum thyroid hormone levels and auto-antibodies were measured.
  • The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) was used to assess depression severity.

Main Results:

  • Patients with euthyroid chronic autoimmune thyroiditis exhibited significantly higher HDRS scores compared to healthy participants.
