Stem Cell Therapy for Tissue Regeneration01:21

Stem Cell Therapy for Tissue Regeneration

Stem cell therapy is a method used in regenerative medicine to repair and restore function to damaged tissues and organs. Stem cells have the potential to proliferate and differentiate into various tissue types, making them ideal candidates for tissue regeneration. For example, hematopoietic stem cell transplants are commonly used in blood cancer treatment to replenish damaged bone marrow and restore healthy blood cells.

Stem Cell Culture

Stem cell research aims to find ways to use stem cells to regenerate and repair cellular damage. Over time, most adult cells undergo the wear and tear of aging and lose their ability to divide and repair themselves. Stem cells do not display a particular morphology or function. Adult stem cells, which exist as a small subset of cells in most tissues, keep dividing and can differentiate into a number of specialized cells generally formed by that tissue. These cells enable the body to renew and...

Area of Science:

  • Regenerative Medicine
  • Craniofacial Biology
  • Stem Cell Biology

Background:

  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are crucial for tissue regeneration.
  • Dental tissues are a rich source of adult stem cells with regenerative potential.
  • Craniofacial tissue engineering seeks to repair and regenerate damaged facial structures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To biologically characterize oral-derived adult stem cells.
  • To discuss their potential applications in craniofacial tissue engineering.
  • To review existing research on dental stem cells for regenerative purposes.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of experimental (in vitro, in vivo) and clinical studies.
  • Analysis of isolation, characterization, and modulation of human dental stem/progenitor cells.
  • Evaluation of preclinical and clinical trial evidence.

Main Results:

  • Five distinct human dental stem/progenitor cell populations were isolated and characterized.
  • These cells display mesenchymal stem cell-like properties.
  • Demonstrated differentiation capacity into odontogenic and osteogenic lineages.

Conclusions:

  • Human dental stem cells possess significant potential for craniofacial tissue engineering.
  • Evidence supports their use in regenerating oral and dental tissues.
  • Further translational applications in clinical settings are supported by preclinical and clinical data.
