Summary
High glass transition temperature (Tg) polymers can form honeycomb coatings on complex surfaces. This study shows linear polymers with high Tg successfully replicate nonplanar substrates using the breath figure technique.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Polymer Chemistry
- Surface Science
Background:
- Previous studies limited honeycomb coatings to polymers with glass transition temperatures (Tg) below 48°C.
- High Tg polymers were considered too brittle to replicate nonplanar substrates.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the formation of macroporous polymeric films on nonplanar substrates using linear polymers with high Tg.
- To challenge the notion that high Tg and substrate topography are critical factors in replicating complex surfaces.
Main Methods:
- Utilized the static breath figure (BF) technique.
- Employed linear polymers with high Tg: polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) and polystyrene.
- Prepared 3D macroporous films on various nonplanar substrates.
Main Results:
- Achieved perfect replication of nonplanar substrate surface features with BF arrays.
- Demonstrated that neither polymer Tg nor molecular topography is the critical factor for contouring nonplanar substrates.
- Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the successful formation of macroporous films.
Conclusions:
- Linear polymers with high Tg can form homogeneous honeycomb coatings on nonplanar substrates.
- A new hypothesis involving polymer plasticization and conformation during solvent evaporation explains the replication process.
- The breath figure technique is effective for creating macroporous films on complex geometries with high Tg polymers.
