Background:

Need for reliable and valid performance evaluation tools in surgical education.
Importance of providing surgeons with feedback on their clinical teaching.
Existing gap in validated tools for assessing faculty teaching in residency programs.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate robust evaluation tools for surgical teaching performance.
To assess the reliability and validity of two specific tools: the System for Evaluation Teaching Qualities (SETQ).
To determine the correlation between surgeons' self-evaluations and residents' evaluations of their teaching.

Main Methods:

Multicenter prospective cohort study involving 343 surgeons and 320 residents.
Administration and analysis of the SETQ tools using standard psychometric techniques.
Estimation of correlations between resident and surgeon self-evaluations.

Main Results:

High response rates achieved (87% surgeons, 84% residents).
SETQ tools demonstrated reliability and validity across five domains: learning climate, professional attitude, goal communication, resident evaluation, and feedback.
Low correlations observed between surgeons' self-evaluations and residents' evaluations (coefficients 0.03–0.18).

Conclusions:

The SETQ tools are reliable and valid for evaluating surgical teaching performance.
The discrepancy between self- and resident-evaluations highlights the need for external feedback.
Informed self-evaluation for surgeons should incorporate external feedback sources.
