Summary

A rare renal leiomyoma, initially detected as an incidentaloma, was successfully treated with laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. This minimally invasive approach offers a viable option for managing these benign kidney tumors.

Background:

  • Renal incidentalomas are frequently discovered benign kidney tumors.
  • Renal leiomyomas are rare benign tumors originating from smooth muscle tissue within the kidney.

Observation:

  • A 60-year-old male presented with a right renal incidentaloma identified during a routine check-up.
  • Imaging revealed a gradually growing renal tumor (1.4 cm to 1.7 cm) over 4 years.
  • The tumor exhibited specific density and enhancement patterns on computed tomography.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent a successful pure laparoscopic non-ischemic partial nephrectomy.
  • Histological examination confirmed the renal mass as a leiomyoma.
  • This represents the 5th reported case of successful laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for renal leiomyoma in Japan.

Implications:

  • Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy is an effective minimally invasive treatment for renal leiomyomas.
  • This case highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and tailored surgical approaches for rare renal tumors.
  • Further research into the optimal management of renal leiomyomas is warranted.
