Psychological trauma significantly impairs time estimation abilities, affecting attention and information processing. This deficit persists long-term, impacting individuals with posttraumatic disorders.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychology
- Trauma Studies
Background:
- Posttraumatic disorders involve intrusions, avoidance, hyperarousal, and cognitive deficits.
- Limited research exists on how trauma impacts time-related information assessment.
- Working memory and executive function disturbances are common in trauma survivors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate time estimation abilities in individuals with acute traumatic experiences compared to healthy controls over 12 months.
- To assess time estimation as a measure of attentional readiness in trauma survivors.
- To determine the acute and long-term effects of psychological traumatization on time perception.
Main Methods:
- A prospective study comparing 39 trauma survivors (acute stress disorder symptoms) with 38 healthy controls.
- Measurements taken at eight time points over a 12-month period.
- Participants performed a prospective time estimation task, estimating a 5-second interval with and without feedback.
Main Results:
- Traumatized individuals demonstrated significantly less precise time estimates than the control group.
- Trauma patients showed larger deviations in time interval estimation, irrespective of feedback.
- Impairment in time estimation was evident both acutely and over the 12-month follow-up.
Conclusions:
- Psychological traumatization causes demonstrable, acute, and long-term impairments in time estimation.
- Disturbances in information processing related to time perception may be both a cause and consequence of trauma symptoms.
- Impaired time estimation highlights cognitive deficits in posttraumatic disorders.
