Observation:

  • A male Golden Retriever presented with clinical signs indicative of a liver abscess.
  • Diagnostic imaging, including radiography, sonography, and computed tomography (CT), identified a large liver abscess with gas accumulation.
  • The abscess was located in the left middle liver lobe and measured 10 x 5 cm.

Findings:

  • Sonographic detection of multiple gas accumulations within circular, inhomogeneous lesions confirmed the liver abscess diagnosis.
  • Surgical therapy involving lobectomy and omentopexy was performed.
  • The dog was discharged in good general condition four days post-operation.

Implications:

  • Surgical lobectomy is an effective treatment for canine liver abscesses, leading to complete patient recovery.
  • While less invasive methods are preferred in human medicine, surgical intervention remains a viable and successful option in veterinary cases.
  • Early and accurate diagnosis through advanced imaging techniques is key to successful outcomes in canine liver disease.
