Summary

Young children struggle with speech recognition in noisy classrooms more than older children and adults. Spatial separation of sound sources significantly improves listening performance for all age groups.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate the effects of age and spatial separation of speech and noise on speech recognition in noise performance in young children.
  • Establish the validity and reliability of the Phrases in Noise Test (PINT) for young children.

Main Methods:

  • Two-way repeated measures design examining age and spatial separation (S0/N0 vs. S0/N180).
  • Participants included 68 children (3-6 years old) and 17 adults.
  • Speech recognition in noise thresholds were measured using the PINT.
