Adolescents with recent-onset anorexia nervosa (AN) did not show set-shifting deficits compared to healthy controls. These findings suggest that set-shifting difficulties may develop later in the course of AN, possibly due to chronic illness.
Area of Science:
- Neuropsychology
- Developmental Psychology
- Eating Disorders Research
Background:
- Set-shifting difficulties are observed in adults with anorexia nervosa (AN).
- It remains unclear whether these difficulties are an early feature of AN or a consequence of chronic illness.
- Adolescence is the typical onset period for AN, necessitating investigation into early-stage cognitive function.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate set-shifting abilities in adolescents with short-duration AN.
- To compare executive functioning, specifically set-shifting, between adolescents with AN and healthy controls (HC).
Main Methods:
- Utilized the Delis-Kaplan executive functioning system and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) to assess set-shifting.
- Collected data on eating psychopathology.
- Compared a sample of 32 adolescent inpatients with AN to 22 healthy controls.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in set-shifting performance were found between adolescents with AN and healthy controls across most measures.
- This suggests that set-shifting deficits may not be present at the early stages of AN in adolescents.
Conclusions:
- The study's findings indicate that set-shifting difficulties in AN might be acquired rather than inherent.
- Further research with larger adolescent samples is recommended to identify potential subsets with set-shifting deficits and their relation to AN chronicity.
