Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Cancer Therapy

Background:

  • Malignant cells exhibit selective sensitivity to hyperthermia, total anoxia, and low pH.
  • These conditions can induce lethal effects specifically in cancerous tissues.
  • Previous research indicates potential for combining these modalities for enhanced cancer treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a novel perfusion system combining hyperthermia, total anoxia, and low pH.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of this combined modality treatment in advanced malignancy.
  • To explore the potential application of this technique in regional infusion therapies.

Main Methods:

  • A specialized perfusion system was designed to deliver combined hyperthermia, total anoxia, and low pH.
  • The system was tested in four patients with advanced malignancy.
  • Treatment duration was standardized at 45 minutes per session.

Main Results:

  • The 45-minute perfusion procedure was found to be safe for normal tissues.
  • The combined modalities demonstrated selective injury to malignant cells.
  • The procedure was technically straightforward to implement.

Conclusions:

  • The combined hyperthermia, anoxia, and low pH perfusion system shows promise as a selective cancer treatment.
  • The method is safe for normal tissues and warrants further investigation.
  • Its simplicity suggests potential for broader application, including regional infusion.
