Area of Science:

  • Physiological monitoring
  • Neuroscience
  • Human-computer interaction

Context:

  • Mental fatigue impacts cognitive performance and reaction times.
  • Objective assessment of mental fatigue is crucial for performance optimization and safety.
  • Current methods for assessing mental fatigue can be invasive or subjective.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of noninvasive physiological signal monitoring for assessing mental fatigue.
  • To identify specific physiological parameters indicative of mental fatigue.
  • To establish a practical method for real-time mental fatigue detection.

Summary:

  • This study analyzed electrodermal activity, heart rate, and heart rate variability in 14 subjects performing reaction-time tasks.
  • Significant differences in skin conductance, heart rate, and heart rate variability parameters were observed between sober and mentally fatigued states.
