Language and Cognition

Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Summary

Cochlear implants significantly improve oral language in deaf children, including those with developmental disabilities. However, children with additional disabilities show slower language gains and increased behavioral issues post-implantation.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric audiology
  • Developmental psychology
  • Speech-language pathology

Background:

  • Cochlear implantation in deaf children with developmental disabilities is increasing.
  • Limited data exists on post-implantation developmental outcomes for this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate oral language and behavioral outcomes over 3 years in deaf children with and without developmental disabilities after cochlear implantation.

Main Methods:

  • A 3-year longitudinal study involving 188 deaf children across 6 US cochlear implant centers.
  • Oral language assessed with Reynell Developmental Language Scales; behavior with Child Behavior Checklist.

Main Results:

  • Both groups showed significant oral language improvement post-implantation.
  • Children with additional disabilities exhibited slower language progress and increased behavioral problems.
  • Children with developmental disorders, like autism, showed the slowest progress and behavioral challenges.

Conclusions:

  • Cochlear implantation supports language development in deaf children with developmental disabilities.
  • The findings suggest cochlear implants are beneficial, despite slower progress in certain subgroups.
