Abstract:
Recent studies show that the cotreatment of patients-when psychotherapy is provided by a therapist and medication managed by a psychiatrist-occurs more frequently than was previously thought; however, little has been published concerning the clinical aspect of such care. In an attempt to address this overlooked area, the authors review the existing literature, describe the difficulties and advantages of cotreatment, and provide case examples. Recommendations are offered to guide mental health practitioners in this apparently common, yet complex, therapeutic triad.
