Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.
Measures of Intelligence01:29

Measures of Intelligence

Psychologists measure intelligence by using standardized tests that produce a score known as the intelligence quotient or IQ. To understand IQ tests, it's important to recognize the key principles behind their construction: validity, reliability, and standardization.
Validity refers to how well a test measures what it claims to measure. An intelligence test should accurately assess intelligence rather than another characteristic, like anxiety. Criterion validity is one way to evaluate this; it...
Cattell's 16 Personality Factors01:24

Cattell's 16 Personality Factors

Raymond Cattell's trait theory offers a structured framework for understanding personality by distinguishing between two critical traits: surface and source traits. Surface traits are observable patterns of behavior, such as indecisiveness, anxiety, and irrational fears. These traits are less stable, varying across situations and over time. This means that they are less helpful in understanding the deeper aspects of an individual's personality.
In contrast, source traits are the fundamental,...

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Rehabilitation Science
  • Health Measurement

Background:

  • Assessing physical capability in older adults is crucial for maintaining independence and quality of life.
  • Existing measurement tools may require further validation for specific populations and settings.
  • The Basic Physical Capability Scale (BPCS) is a potential tool for evaluating physical function in older individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct psychometric testing of the Basic Physical Capability Scale (BPCS).
  • To evaluate the reliability and validity of the BPCS using data from older adults in acute-care and long-term care settings.

Main Methods:

  • Secondary data analysis of combined datasets from three studies.
  • Rasch analysis was employed to test the measurement model of the BPCS.
  • Internal consistency and interrater reliability were assessed.

Main Results:

  • The BPCS demonstrated preliminary support for construct validity.
  • Physical function was significantly associated with physical capability, supporting hypothesis testing.
  • Evidence for internal consistency (Alpha coefficients of .77-.83) and interrater reliability (ICC of .81) was found.

Conclusions:

  • The Basic Physical Capability Scale (BPCS) shows preliminary support for reliability and validity.
  • Findings provide guidance for scale revisions and continued use in assessing older adults.
  • The BPCS can be a valuable tool in gerontology and rehabilitation research.
