Summary

Reducing waste from hip and knee replacement surgeries can save money and help the environment. A study found that a significant portion of operating room waste from total hip arthroplasties (THAs) and total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) is recyclable.

  • Waste (excluding liquids) was collected and sorted during each procedure.
  • Waste composition was analyzed to determine the proportion of recyclable materials.
  • Main Results:

    • Average waste per THA was 30.0 lb; per TKA was 33.2 lb.
    • Approximately 22.8% of THA waste and 22.0% of TKA waste was potentially recyclable paper or plastic.
    • Significant volumes of clean, recyclable materials are discarded as contaminated waste.

    Conclusions:

    • Implementing targeted recycling programs for clean operating room waste can reduce disposal costs.
    • Orthopedic surgery waste management can be optimized by focusing on recycling initiatives.
    • Reducing contaminated waste processing is key to decreasing hospital overhead and environmental impact.
