Summary

This study found a significant link between qi-stagnation, a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and insomnia. Individuals with qi-stagnation experience a higher risk of sleep difficulties, suggesting TCM constitution may play a role in insomnia management.

Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Sleep Science
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Background:

  • Insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder impacting overall health.
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers holistic approaches to health and well-being.
  • Qi-stagnation is a TCM pattern associated with various physical and emotional discomforts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between qi-stagnation and insomnia.
  • To utilize standardized sleep quality measures and TCM Constitution Scales for assessment.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was conducted on 169 participants aged 16-80.
  • Standardized instruments including the TCM Constitution Scales, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and Deep Sleep Scale (DSS) were used.
  • Sleep quality and insomnia symptoms were compared between the qi-stagnation group and other-constitution groups.

Main Results:

  • The qi-stagnation group showed a significantly increased risk of difficulty falling asleep and early waking.
  • A dose-effect relationship was observed between insomnia symptoms and qi-stagnation.
  • The other-constitution group exhibited a significant risk of dreaminess.

Conclusions:

  • A statistically significant association exists between qi-stagnation and insomnia.
  • TCM constitution is a relevant factor in understanding and potentially treating insomnia.
  • Further research into TCM-based rehabilitative care for insomnia is recommended.
