Background:

  • Defining normal pubic symphysis width in children is challenging.
  • Pathologic widening requires established reference ranges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish normal pubic symphyseal widths in pediatric patients.
  • To stratify ranges by age and gender using CT scans.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 140 pediatric patients' axial CT scans (ages 2-15).
  • Measurement of narrowest pubic symphyseal width.
  • Stratification into age groups (2-5, 6-11, 12-15 years) and by gender.

Main Results:

  • Mean pubic symphysis width across all subjects was 4.59 mm.
  • Males (4.86 mm) had wider symphyses than females (4.33 mm).
  • Width significantly decreased with age, particularly between younger and older groups, and differed between sexes.

Conclusions:

  • Pediatric males typically have wider pubic symphyses than females.
  • Pubic symphysis width decreases with age towards skeletal maturity in both sexes.
