Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a modified GlideScope (GVL) blade on endotracheal tube (ETT) intubation time.
  • To assess the ease and success rate of intubation using a modified GVL blade.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 60 patients undergoing elective surgery with anticipated normal airways.
  • Patients were randomized to intubation with a modified GVL blade (Group M) or a conventional GVL blade with a stylet (Group C).
  • The modified GVL blade featured a conduit for direct ETT passage through the vocal cords.

Main Results:

  • The modified GVL blade group (Group M) demonstrated a significantly shorter time to successful tracheal intubation (TTI) (39.6±2.1s) compared to the conventional group (Group C) (66.4±8.3s) (p=0.0001).
  • Intubation was perceived as easier with the modified blade (VAS 2±1 vs 6±1, p=0.0001).
  • First-attempt intubation success was higher in Group M (100%) versus Group C (90%) (p=0.009).

Conclusions:

  • Adding a conduit to the GlideScope (GVL) blade facilitates easier endotracheal tube (ETT) passage.
  • This modification shortens intubation time (TTI) without increasing adverse events or intubation failure.
  • The modified GVL blade offers a potentially improved approach to endotracheal intubation.
