A 52-year-old man experienced malaise, left hypochondrium pain, and diarrhea. Imaging revealed portal hypertension, splenic vein dilatation, and thrombi in the portal and superior mesenteric veins.
Area of Science:
- Vascular Surgery
- Gastroenterology
- Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Portal hypertension is a serious complication often associated with liver disease.
- Splenic vein dilatation and thrombosis can occur secondary to portal hypertension.
- Accurate diagnosis is crucial for managing complications and improving patient outcomes.
Observation:
- A 52-year-old male patient presented with generalized malaise, left hypochondrium pain, and diarrhea.
- Clinical presentation suggested potential intra-abdominal pathology.
- Diagnostic workup was initiated to investigate the patient's symptoms.
Findings:
- Color Doppler ultrasound and contrast-enhanced CT scan were performed.
- Imaging demonstrated characteristic changes of portal hypertension.
- Specific findings included saccular dilatation of the splenic vein and partial thrombus formation in both the portal vein and superior mesenteric vein.
Implications:
- The identified vascular abnormalities indicate significant hemodynamic compromise.
- Thrombosis in the portal and mesenteric veins poses a risk for further complications like bowel ischemia.
- Urgent management strategies are necessary to address the portal hypertension and venous thrombosis.
