Summary

This study validates automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) for newborn hearing screening, finding it acceptable. It also highlights that temporary hearing loss in infants often resolves by age one.

Main Results:

  • 10,879 neonates were screened; 1.36% were referred, with 45 showing ABR thresholds over 30 dB nHL.
  • Of 34 subjects with initial hearing loss, 11 normalized by follow-up.
  • Severe to profound hearing loss was consistently identified as congenital, unlike mild/moderate temporary losses.

Conclusions:

  • The AABR screening protocol demonstrated acceptable referral rates and positive predictive value.
  • A significant proportion of temporary hearing loss cases were identified initially.
  • Further differentiation using bone conduction and middle ear testing is recommended for temporary hearing loss.
