Knee Joint01:23

Knee Joint

The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Additionally, several ligaments, muscles, and cartilaginous structures support the movement of the knee.
A total of seven ligaments support the knee joint. The patellar ligament, which is also attached to the quadriceps femoris group...

Floating platforms (FP) showed no significant advantage over rotating platforms (RP) in computer-navigated total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for range of motion or knee function outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Computer-navigated total knee arthroplasty (TKA) utilizes advanced systems for precise implant placement.
  • The choice of implant platform, such as floating platforms (FP) and rotating platforms (RP), may influence surgical outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of floating platforms (FP) versus rotating platforms (RP) in computer-navigated TKA.
  • To evaluate differences in range of motion (ROM) and knee function (Knee Society Score - KSS) between FP and RP.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, non-randomized single-centre cohort study of 255 patients undergoing computer-navigated TKA.
  • Patients received either FP (n=129) or RP (n=126) implants for gonarthrosis.
  • Analysis of covariance adjusted for preoperative ROM, KSS, gender, age, and BMI was used to compare outcomes at 3 and 24 months.

The Lower Body Positive Pressure Treadmill for Knee Osteoarthritis Rehabilitation

Published on: July 22, 2019

Main Results:

  • The FP group had significantly higher preoperative ROM and KSS.
  • No significant differences in ROM or KSS were observed between the FP and RP groups at 3-month or 24-month follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Floating platform (FP) design offers no discernible advantage over rotating platform (RP) in computer-navigated TKA.
  • Neither early nor long-term follow-up showed superior ROM or functional outcomes with FP compared to RP.
