Summary

Seven in ten patients with spondylarthritis (SpA) meet physical activity guidelines. However, differences in meeting these recommendations exist between sexes and SpA subtypes, impacting lifestyle coaching.

  • A questionnaire assessing physical activity was distributed to 3,711 patients with SpA in 2009.
  • Physical activity was evaluated against WHO recommendations: 150 minutes of moderate-intensity (MI-PA) or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity (VI-PA) per week.
  • Multivariate analysis examined associations between sex, age, disease variables, anxiety, depression, and meeting physical activity recommendations.
  • Main Results:

    • Out of 2,167 respondents, 68% of SpA patients met WHO physical activity recommendations.
    • Women (70%) were slightly more likely than men (66%) to meet recommendations.
    • The SpA group, overall, met recommendations more often than the general Swedish population (RR 1.09).

    Conclusions:

    • A majority of patients with SpA achieve recommended physical activity levels, aligning with general population data.
    • Significant variations in meeting physical activity guidelines were observed based on sex and SpA subtype.
    • These findings offer valuable insights for personalized clinical guidance to promote healthier lifestyles in SpA patients.
