Overview of Carbohydrate Metabolism01:19

Overview of Carbohydrate Metabolism

Carbohydrate metabolism is a fundamental biochemical process that ensures a constant supply of energy to living cells. The most important carbohydrate is glucose, which can be broken down via glycolysis to enter into the Krebs cycle and eventually lead to the production of ATP through oxidative phosphorylation.
Glucose transport into cells is facilitated by a family of transport proteins called GLUT (Glucose Transporters). GLUT4 is the primary glucose transporter for insulin-stimulated glucose...

Negative and Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Negative symptoms of schizophrenia indicate a reduction or absence of typical behaviors and emotional responses found in healthy individuals, while positive symptoms reflect an excess or distortion of normal functioning.
Negative Symptoms
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia manifest as deficits in normal emotional and behavioral functioning, profoundly impacting daily life. Individuals with schizophrenia often display a flat affect, characterized by a near-total absence of emotional expression,...
Language and Cognition01:27

Language and Cognition

Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Coronary Artery Disease I: Introduction

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): An Overview with Scientific InsightsCoronary Artery Disease (CAD), often referred to as C-A-D, is a prevalent blood vessel disorder classified under the broader category of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a pathological process characterized by the hardening and narrowing of arteries due to the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaques. These plaques are composed of cholesterol, fatty substances, inflammatory cells, calcium, and fibrin, reducing blood flow to...

Type II Diabetes II: Pathophysiology

PathophysiologyType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM ) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and progressive pancreatic β-cell dysfunction, leading to impaired glucose homeostasis. It results from interactions among genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and metabolic stressors, such as overnutrition and a sedentary lifestyle.Insulin Resistance and Glucose DysregulationEarly T2DM involves insulin resistance in skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, and the liver.
Information Processing Approach01:30

Information Processing Approach

The information-processing theory of cognitive development centers on fundamental mental processes, including attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. Researchers in this field examine how cognitive abilities, such as working memory, evolve and influence children's overall development. Studies indicate that children with stronger working memory tend to excel in reading comprehension, math, and problem-solving compared to peers with less efficient memory skills. Low working memory is also...

Summary

Metabolic syndrome is linked to poorer cognitive function in older Koreans. Further research is needed to confirm if metabolic syndrome causes cognitive decline or if its management can improve brain health.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Neurology
  • Metabolic Health

Background:

  • Metabolic syndrome's impact on cognitive function is debated.
  • Conflicting results exist regarding metabolic syndrome and cognition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between metabolic syndrome and cognitive function.
  • Focus on Korean adults over 60 years old.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of elderly participants in Gyeonggi-do province.
  • Categorization into metabolic syndrome (n=48) and control (n=45) groups.
  • Cognitive function assessed using the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD-K).

Main Results:

  • Participants with metabolic syndrome exhibited significantly lower overall CERAD-K scores compared to controls (P=0.010).
  • Specific deficits were noted in verbal fluency, construction recall, word list learning, and trail making B.
  • Metabolic syndrome remained an independent predictor of cognitive function after adjusting for covariates (P=0.014).
  • Alcohol intake and education years also significantly influenced cognitive function.

Conclusions:

  • A significant relationship exists between cognitive function and metabolic syndrome in the elderly Korean population.
  • Prospective studies are recommended to establish causality and explore potential therapeutic benefits of metabolic syndrome management.
