Intrauterine Drug Delivery Systems01:21

Intrauterine Drug Delivery Systems

Controlled-release systems for intravaginal and intrauterine drug delivery have been developed primarily for the administration of contraceptive steroid hormones. These delivery routes circumvent first-pass hepatic metabolism, thereby enhancing bioavailability and allowing for reduced systemic dosages compared to oral administration. Such approaches contribute to improved therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance, particularly in long-term contraceptive regimens.Intravaginal Drug Delivery...
In Vitro Fertilization01:24

In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a form of assisted reproductive technology where an egg is fertilized with sperm in a controlled laboratory environment before transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus. This process is designed to help individuals and couples experiencing difficulties conceiving.
The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation, during which reproductive endocrinologists prescribe hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of the single...
Birth Control Methods01:22

Birth Control Methods

Vasectomy is a surgical form of male sterilization that involves severing and sealing the vasa deferentia, preventing sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Because a vasectomy does not impact the testes' ability to produce testosterone, hormone levels, libido, and sexual function generally remain unchanged. While vasectomy is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a success rate near 99.85%, rare cases of recanalization (spontaneous reconnection) can occur. Although vasectomy...

Summary

Immediate postabortion intrauterine device (IUD) insertion shows high continuation and satisfaction rates. This study highlights the effectiveness of IUDs for preventing unintended pregnancy following abortion.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Contraception
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Immediate postabortion intrauterine device (IUD) insertion can reduce unintended pregnancies in the US.
  • While safe and effective, data on continuation, satisfaction, and bleeding are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess continuation, satisfaction, and bleeding patterns in women receiving immediate postabortion IUDs.
  • To evaluate the feasibility of follow-up for this patient group.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study of women undergoing immediate postabortion IUD insertion.
  • Demographic and clinical data collected from intake forms and procedure notes.
  • Telephone questionnaires administered to assess outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Contacted 77 of 225 women (34% follow-up rate).
  • Higher parity and gestational age at abortion were associated with loss to follow-up.
  • High continuation (80.5%) and satisfaction (80.6%) rates observed.
  • Reported bleeding patterns were consistent with existing literature.

Conclusions:

  • Follow-up for immediate postabortion IUD insertion presents challenges.
  • Women opting for immediate postabortion IUDs demonstrate high continuation and satisfaction.
