Summary

Dentists using noisy equipment like ultrasonic scalers and older dental turbines face a higher risk of hearing impairment (HI). Regular maintenance and replacement of dental instruments are recommended to prevent hearing loss.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of perceived hearing impairment among dentists.
  • To identify occupational and recreational factors associated with hearing impairment in dentists.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 100 general dental practitioners (GDPs) and 115 general practitioners (GPs) in Rome, Italy.
  • Data collected through interviews on risk factors, symptoms (tinnitus, hypoacusis), and perceived hearing impairment during workdays and weekends.
  • Statistical analysis to investigate associations between presumptive HI and various factors.

Main Results:

  • Prevalence of presumptive hearing impairment was 30.0% in GDPs versus 14.8% in GPs.
