Summary

Intracapsular cataract extraction can lead to aphakic retinal detachment. Age and myopia are significant risk factors, and a previous detachment in one eye increases risk in the other.

Background:

  • Intracapsular cataract extraction (ICCE) is a surgical procedure for cataracts.
  • Aphakic retinal detachment (ARD) is a potential complication following ICCE.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence and risk factors of ARD after ICCE.
  • To identify predictors for ARD in a large patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 8350 eyes undergoing ICCE over 12 years.
  • Evaluation of factors including age, sex, intraoperative complications, refractive errors, and pseudophakia.

Main Results:

  • 118 eyes (1.4%) developed ARD.
  • Age and myopia were significantly associated with increased ARD risk.
  • Previous ARD in one eye strongly predicted ARD in the contralateral eye.

Conclusions:

  • ARD is a significant complication of ICCE.
  • Patient age and myopia are key risk factors for ARD.
  • Contralateral eye ARD risk warrants careful monitoring post-ICCE.
