Sexually Transmitted Infections01:26

Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...
Sex-linked Disorders01:43

Sex-linked Disorders

Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra. Symptoms...
Disorders of the Female Reproductive System01:24

Disorders of the Female Reproductive System

The female reproductive system can be affected by several disorders, including Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), endometriosis, and various forms of cancer. PMS and PMDD are cyclical conditions that cause physical and emotional distress, with symptoms that include edema, mood swings, and food cravings. PMDD is a more severe form of PMS characterized by increased symptom severity that peaks during the luteal phase and tends to improve or resolve shortly after...
External Female Genitals01:15

External Female Genitals

The vulva encompasses the external structures of the female reproductive system. At the forefront is the monpubis, a cushion of fatty tissue atop the pubic bone. Once puberty sets in, this area typically grows hair. Extending from just behind the mons pubis are the labia majora (labia = 'lips'; majora = 'larger'), which are larger skin fs olds coated with hair. Nestled within are the labia minora (labia = 'lips'; minora = 'smaller'), which are thinner, more pigmented, and hairless. While the...
Penis01:29

Penis

The penis serves a dual role in sexual reproduction and urination. It consists of three main regions: the glans penis, the body, and the root, each with distinct functions and unique anatomical features.
Anatomy of the Penis
The glans penis, or the head, is the terminal part of the penis and houses the external urethral orifice, the exit point for urine and semen. Covered by the prepuce, or foreskin, the glans is noted for its sensitivity and plays a key role in sexual pleasure. The body of the...

    Summary

External genital warts, caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), are common. Current treatments focus on wart removal, not eliminating the virus, with no single ideal therapy available.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Virology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • External genital warts (condylomata acuminata) are a prevalent sexually transmitted infection.
    • Over 120 human papillomavirus (HPV) subtypes exist; HPV types 6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts.
    • Current treatments primarily address wart removal, not the underlying HPV infection.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review the current landscape of external genital wart treatments.
    • To highlight the variability and limitations of existing therapeutic options.

    Main Methods:

    • Literature review of current treatment modalities for external genital warts.
    • Analysis of treatment characteristics including cost, side effects, dosing, duration, and effectiveness.

    Main Results:

    • A wide array of therapies are in use for genital warts, showing significant variability.
    • No single treatment has emerged as the definitive standard of care.
    • Treatment selection is individualized based on patient-specific factors.

    Conclusions:

    • The management of external genital warts remains challenging due to the lack of a definitive standard therapy.
    • Patient-specific factors guide the selection of variable treatment options.
    • Further research may be needed to identify more effective and standardized treatment strategies.
