  • To investigate the effect of hydrocortisone on burn wound healing in a rat model.
  • To evaluate parameters including epithelialization, fibrosis, inflammation, fibroblast presence, and vascular proliferation.

Summary:

  • Wistar rats with standardized burns received either hydrocortisone (5 mg/kg) or no medication.
  • Evaluations at day 5 and day 14 assessed infection, epithelialization, fibrosis, inflammation, fibroblast presence, and vascular proliferation.
  • No significant differences were observed in fibrosis, inflammation, or fibroblast presence between groups.

Impact:

  • Hydrocortisone administration in burn wounds resulted in increased vascular proliferation compared to controls.
  • No signs of infection were noted, and complete epithelialization occurred in all rats by day 14.
  • Steroids may influence specific aspects of burn healing, such as angiogenesis, warranting further investigation.
