Insights
Barium enema (BE) successfully reduced intussusception in 58.6% of cases. Plain abdominal radiographs are valuable for ruling out this condition in pediatric patients.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Radiology
- Gastrointestinal Imaging
Background:
- Intussusception is a common surgical emergency in infants and children.
- Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and reducing complications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of barium enema (BE) in reducing intussusception.
- To assess the diagnostic value of plain abdominal radiographs in suspected intussusception cases.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 98 patients (104 instances) with intussusception.
- Inclusion criteria: primary admission to diagnostic radiology, pre-BE/surgery radiographs, and confirmed diagnosis via BE or surgery.
Main Results:
- Barium enema achieved a successful reduction rate of 58.6%.
- Plain abdominal radiographs demonstrated utility in excluding the diagnosis of intussusception.
Conclusions:
- Barium enema is an effective treatment modality for intussusception with a significant success rate.
- Plain abdominal radiography plays a key role in the diagnostic workup of pediatric intussusception.
Abstract:
A retrospective study of 98 patients representing 104 instances of intussusception is reviewed. Criteria for inclusion in the study were: the patients primary admitted to the department of diagnostic radiology, plain abdominal radiographs performed prior to barium enema (BE) and/or surgery and diagnosis confirmed by BE or surgery. A success rate of BE reduction of 58.6% was achieved. The clinical features are described and the value of plain abdominal radiograph in ruling out the diagnosis of intussusception is discussed.
