Summary

D,L,-beta-hydroxybutyrate (BOHB) causes neural tube defects in early mouse embryos by disrupting pyrimidine biosynthesis, not the pentose phosphate pathway. Embryos can recover, suggesting stage-dependent teratogenesis mechanisms.
