Purpose of the Study:

  • To integrate parent-child interaction dynamics and neurocognitive measures of emotion regulation.
  • To investigate the association between dyadic flexibility and brain activity during emotion regulation in aggressive children.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed 60 aggressive children (8-12 years) using dense-array EEG during a go/no-go task to measure N2 amplitudes and source activation.
  • Analyzed parent-child conflict resolution interactions using state space grids to derive dynamic flexibility parameters (transitions, dispersion).

Main Results:

  • Parent-child interaction flexibility measures were not correlated with N2 amplitudes (inhibitory control).
  • Dyadic flexibility significantly correlated with the ratio of dorsomedial to ventral brain activation.
  • Greater flexibility in parent-child interactions was associated with increased dorsomedial activation.

Conclusions:

  • Parent-child interaction flexibility is linked to specific patterns of brain activation during emotion regulation.
  • Children with more flexible dyadic interactions may better recruit dorsomedial brain regions for emotion regulation.
  • Findings highlight the interplay between social interaction and neurocognitive mechanisms in childhood aggression.
