Self-Presentation01:25

Self-Presentation

Self-presentation is a fundamental aspect of social interaction, shaping both how others perceive individuals and how they view themselves. This dynamic process influences behaviors in various social settings, often leading people to adjust their appearance, speech, and demeanor to align with their desired identity. While self-presentation can be deliberate or unconscious, it plays a critical role in interpersonal relationships and self-perception.Forms of Self-PresentationSelf-presentation can...

Overview
Pleiotropy01:33

Pleiotropy

Pleiotropy is the phenomenon in which a single gene impacts multiple, seemingly unrelated phenotypic traits. For example, defects in the SOX10 gene cause Waardenburg Syndrome Type 4, or WS4, which can cause defects in pigmentation, hearing impairments, and an absence of intestinal contractions necessary for elimination. This diversity of phenotypes results from the expression pattern of SOX10 in early embryonic and fetal development. SOX10 is found in neural crest cells that form melanocytes,...
Levels of Organization01:09

Levels of Organization

Biological organization is the classification of biological structures, ranging from atoms at the bottom of the hierarchy to the Earth's biosphere. Each level of the hierarchy represents an increase in complexity that builds upon the previous level.
Molecules Are Composed of Atoms, and Biomolecules Are Assembled from Molecules:
The most basic levels include atoms, molecules, and biomolecules. Atoms, the smallest unit of ordinary matter, are composed of a nucleus and electrons. Molecules...
Communication01:03

Communication

Communication between two animals occurs when one animal transmits an information signal that causes a change in the animal that receives the information. Organisms communicate with one another in a host of different ways. Signals can be auditory, chemical, visual, tactile, or a combination of these. Communication is a critical behavioral adaptation that promotes survival, growth, and reproduction.
The Scientific Method01:32

The Scientific Method

The scientific method is a detailed, empirical problem-solving process used by biologists and other scientists. This iterative approach involves formulating a question based on observation, developing a testable potential explanation for the observation (called a hypothesis), making and testing predictions based on the hypothesis, and using the findings to create new hypotheses and predictions.
Generally, predictions are tested using carefully-designed experiments. Based on the outcome of these...

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Medical Education
  • Academic Publishing

Background:

  • Publication rates for medical conference presentations vary widely (11%-78%), averaging 45%.
  • No prior studies have specifically examined the publication rate of plastic surgery meeting presentations in Korea.
  • This study addresses the gap by investigating the publication rate of presentations from Korean plastic surgery society meetings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the publication rate of abstracts presented at the Congress of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (CKSPRS).
  • To analyze factors influencing publication, including presentation type and time to publication.

Main Methods:

  • Collected abstracts from CKSPRS meetings (2005-2007).
  • Searched PubMed, KoreaMed, KMbase, and Google Scholar for full-text publications.
  • Reviewed publication rate, presentation type, time to publication, and journal of publication.

Main Results:

  • A total of 1,176 abstracts were evaluated.
  • The publication rate was 38.7% (oral: 41.0%, poster: 34.8%).
  • The mean time to publication was 15.04 months, with the Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons being the most frequent publication venue.

Conclusions:

  • The 38.7% publication rate is below the average for medical meetings.
  • Valuable research presented at CKSPRS may be underutilized if not published as full papers.
  • Efforts should be made to increase the dissemination of findings from these presentations.
