Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • A 38-year-old male presented with fever, sore throat, and abdominal pain following a hemicolectomy for suspected lymphoma.
  • Initial treatment for presumed inflammatory bowel disease with corticosteroids was ineffective.

Observation:

  • Colonoscopy revealed characteristic ulcerations in the descending colon and at the ileocolic anastomosis.
  • These findings mimicked those typically seen in Behcet's colitis.

Findings:

  • Pathological review of biopsy and surgical specimens confirmed polymorphic reticulosis involving the colon.
  • This represents the first reported case of colonic involvement by polymorphic reticulosis.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Polymorphic reticulosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease, especially when colonoscopic findings are atypical.
  • Accurate diagnosis is essential for initiating appropriate treatment with chemotherapy, including cyclophosphamide and glucocorticosteroids.
