Background:

  • Nail psoriasis presents limited therapeutic options, especially when it is the sole manifestation of the disease.
  • Current treatments for nail psoriasis are insufficient for many patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical tacrolimus 0.1% ointment for nail psoriasis.
  • To compare tacrolimus treatment against a no-treatment control in a randomized study.

Main Methods:

  • An open-label, randomized controlled study involving 21 psoriatic patients.
  • Tacrolimus 0.1% ointment was applied to affected nails on one hand for 12 weeks, with the other hand serving as a control.
  • Nail Psoriasis Severity Index (NAPSI) was used to assess disease severity.

  • A statistically significant improvement in nail psoriasis was observed in the tacrolimus-treated hands compared to control hands (P < 0.001).
