Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between specific pain beliefs (organic vs. psychological) and functional status in individuals with rheumatologic conditions.
  • To determine if organic or psychological pain beliefs are linked to poorer functioning.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 236 members of Arthritis New Zealand (ANZ) participating in exercise and education programs.
  • Validated instruments, including the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale 2nd version-Short Form (AIMS2-SF) for functioning and the Pain Beliefs Questionnaires (PBQ) for pain beliefs, were utilized.
  • Statistical analysis was performed on 144 valid responses (61% response rate) to identify significant relationships (α=0.05, 1-β=0.8).

Main Results:

  • A significant positive correlation was found between the organic beliefs scale of the PBQ and poorer functioning as measured by the AIMS2-SF (r=0.32, P=0.00008).
  • No significant relationship was identified between the psychological beliefs scale of the PBQ and functioning (AIMS2-SF).

Conclusions:

  • Organic pain beliefs are significantly associated with diminished functioning in individuals with rheumatologic conditions.
  • Psychological pain beliefs do not appear to influence functional status in this population.
  • Findings suggest that interventions targeting organic pain beliefs may be beneficial for improving function in rheumatologic patients.
