Background:

International mental health policies show varied support for recovery.
Existing conceptual frameworks for recovery require validation and characterization.
Understanding the global distribution and foundations of recovery conceptualizations is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To validate an existing conceptual framework for mental health recovery.
To characterize the distribution, scientific foundations, and emphasis of published recovery conceptualizations by country.
To analyze the global landscape of recovery conceptualizations.

Main Methods:

Systematic review and narrative synthesis of published recovery conceptualizations.
Inclusion of 105 conceptualizations from 115 papers after quality assessment.
Validation of the conceptual framework with 18 new papers.

Main Results:

Recovery conceptualizations were identified from 11 countries, predominantly English-speaking (USA 47%, UK 25%).
Scientific foundations were mainly qualitative research (53%), literature reviews (24%), and position papers (12%).
A similar distribution of key recovery processes was observed across countries.

Conclusions:

Current English-language recovery conceptualizations rely heavily on qualitative studies and position papers from English-speaking nations.
The validated conceptual framework supports existing understanding.
A research priority is developing recovery conceptualizations using diverse research designs across different cultures and non-majority populations.
