Nociception—the ability to feel pain—is essential for an organism’s survival and overall well-being. Noxious stimuli such as piercing pain from a sharp object, heat from an open flame, or contact with corrosive chemicals are first detected by sensory receptors, called nociceptors, located on nerve endings. Tooth pulp exposure in rodents significantly increases meal duration, indicating this change can measure tooth pain. Analgesic treatment prevented this increase, confirming meal duration as a pain indicator.

  • To determine if meal duration can serve as a measurable indicator of tooth nociception.

  • Rats underwent pulp exposure of mandibular molars in computerized feeding modules.
  • Meal duration was monitored for 13 days post-exposure.
  • A second study involved pre-treatment with the analgesic buprenorphine-HCl or saline before pulp exposure.
