Anaerobic endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus saccharolyticus.

Summary

This report details the first infective endocarditis case caused by Staphylococcus saccharolyticus, a rare anaerobe. A healthy adult male was successfully treated with a six-week course of nafcillin and gentamicin.

Background:

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious infection of the heart's inner lining, typically affecting heart valves.
While common causes of IE include Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species, infections by anaerobic bacteria are less frequent.
Staphylococcus saccharolyticus is an anaerobic bacterium not previously documented as a cause of infective endocarditis.
