Veneer01:19

Veneer

Veneer refers to a thin sheet of wood, typically produced to a thickness of about one-eighth of an inch or less. This material is crafted through various methods, the most common being rotary cutting. In this process, a log is mounted into a large lathe and spun against a knife edge, peeling off a continuous strip of wood as the knife penetrates deeper into the rotating log, creating a rotary-cut veneer.
Other veneering techniques include plain-slicing, quarter-slicing, and rift-slicing. These...

Area of Science:

  • Dental prosthetics
  • Digital dentistry
  • Computer-aided design (CAD)

Context:

  • Veneer restoration is crucial for dental esthetics.
  • Traditional methods can be time-consuming and may not always meet precise esthetic standards.
  • Advancements in digital technology offer potential improvements in veneer fabrication.

Purpose:

  • To explore the computer-aided design (CAD) method for veneer restoration.
  • To assess the feasibility of CAD and reverse engineering (RE) in achieving esthetic morphology standards for dental prostheses.
  • To establish a technique guideline for CAD-based veneer reconstruction.

Summary:

  • A volunteer's upper right central incisor was restored using CAD and RE software.
  • Three-dimensional laser scanning of stone models captured pre- and post-preparation dentition.
  • The veneer margin was designed as butt-to-butt, and the veneer was constructed using RE software, resulting in smooth, continuous, and symmetrical restorations.

Impact:

  • Demonstrates a feasible method for reconstructing veneer restorations utilizing RE technology.
  • Highlights the potential of CAD and RE in meeting complex esthetic construction needs in dentistry.
  • Provides a foundation for further development and application of digital workflows in restorative dentistry.
