Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate awareness, use, and harm perceptions of e-cigarettes among US adults.
  • To identify demographic and smoking status correlates of e-cigarette awareness, use, and perceptions.

Main Methods:

  • Data from two national surveys in 2010: an online study (n=2649) and the Legacy Longitudinal Smoker Cohort (n=3658).
  • Multivariable models were employed to analyze awareness, use, and harm perceptions.

Main Results:

  • 40.2% of US adults had heard of e-cigarettes, with higher awareness among current smokers.
  • E-cigarette utilization was 3.4% in the general population, significantly higher among current smokers (11.4%) and former smokers (2.0%).
  • Current smokers, young adults, non-Hispanic Whites, and individuals with a high-school diploma were more likely to perceive e-cigarettes as less harmful than regular cigarettes.

Conclusions:

  • E-cigarette awareness is substantial, and use is present among current and former smokers.
  • Product regulation and ongoing surveillance are recommended to monitor public health implications.
  • Further investigation is needed to understand the reasons, methods, and conditions of e-cigarette use.
