Summary

Cochlear implants with Flex arrays enable deep insertion, preserving residual hearing in adults. While some hearing loss occurred post-surgery, the arrays demonstrated reproducible hearing preservation.

Main Results:

  • Mean array insertion length was 25 ± 0.9 mm, with a mean cochlear coverage of 435 ± 14.5°.
  • No significant difference in insertion depth or coverage was observed between Flex EAS® and Flex Soft® arrays.
  • Residual low-frequency hearing was initially preserved but showed a significant deterioration post-surgery (55.1 dB pre-op vs. 81.0 dB post-op, p < 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Both Flex EAS® and Flex Soft® arrays facilitate deep cochlear insertion.
  • These arrays allow for reproducible hearing preservation, despite a post-operative decline in residual low-frequency hearing.
