A new spectrophotometric method accurately determines molybdenum using a polymethine dye. This sequential injection analysis (SIA) technique is effective for analyzing molybdenum in water samples.
Area of Science:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Spectrophotometry
Background:
- Molybdenum is an essential trace element, but its accurate determination in water is crucial.
- Existing methods for molybdenum detection can be complex or require extensive sample preparation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a non-extractive sequential injection spectrophotometric method for molybdenum determination.
- To validate the method's performance and applicability to water samples.
Main Methods:
- Sequential injection analysis (SIA) coupled with spectrophotometry.
- Utilized the reaction of molybdenum's thiocyanate complex with a polymethine dye in a hydrochloric acid medium.
Main Results:
- Achieved a linear calibration range of 0.080–1.92 mg/L for molybdenum.
- Established a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.021 mg/L.
- Successfully applied the method to determine molybdenum in spiked drinking and mineral water.
Conclusions:
- The developed non-extractive SIA method offers a sensitive and efficient approach for molybdenum analysis.
- The method is suitable for routine monitoring of molybdenum in various water types.
